The history behind Reflexology is a fascinating one. Healthcare and the feet are believed to have dated back to ancient Egypt, from as far back as approximately 2300BC. The picture below was discovered in Saqqara, Egypt in the tomb of ancient Egyptian Ankhmahor in 1899.
Ankhmahor was considered one of the most influential people at that time, second only to the King. Although he was not a physician, his tomb "The Physicians Tomb" contained some interesting scenes of medical practice.
In this picture two patients are receiving reflexology on their hands and feet. The inscription says "Don't hurt me" and the practitioners reply is "I shall act so you praise me" (1). I can personally relate to this as during a reflexology session, a reflexologist will ask and adjust pressure according to the clients needs.
Reflexology was also used with acupuncture by the Chinese. Dr Wang-Wei, a Chinese doctor in the 4th century BC, evidently used to position acupuncture needles in his patients bodies and then apply very firm pressure with his thumbs to the soles of their feet. This pressure was maintained for several minutes until the desired therapeutic effects were achieved. (2)
In the ancient world of healing, both the Egyptians and the Chinese were considered great centres and their teachings have spread around the world. Other therapies that were used in the ancient times and are still used today such as Tai Chi, Acupuncture, Reiki, Herbalism and Auyerveda.
Stay tuned for my next article which will explain how this ancient form of healing developed into Reflexology as we know it today.
