What is Reflexology?

Updated: Jul 31, 2021

Reflexology is based on the principle that the foot has reflex points that correspond to the various structures and organs throughout the body. All organs and glands and parts of the body have representing reflexes on the hands and feet. In order for the body to heal by itself, it needs to be balanced.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy where alternating pressure is applied to the feet in a special way. As our bodies are mirrored in our feet and connected through energy channels, we are able to affect the different parts of the body by this special relaxing pressure.

No one really knows exactly how this happens, but it could be that by stimulating the feet we are sending minute electrical impulses up the nerves, which run through the body. Remember the feet have thousands of nerve endings.

Reflexology follows the principles of zone therapy where the body is divided into ten longitudinal zones, 5 on each side of the body- the sternum or spine being the centre line.

The alternating pressure we use seems to activate the body’s energy, usually within the zones which encourages the clearing away of blockages so that the body can continue to heal itself – something which is usually on-going.

Unfortunately stress and disease put our systems out of balance, upsetting the body’s chemistry. This is where Reflexology or reflex zone therapy as it is sometimes called helps to re-balance and stabilise our body systems again.

The lovely thing about Reflexology is that it normalises – where stimulation is required, stimulation occurs. Where calming is required, calming occurs. The body takes from Reflexology whatever it needs.

When the body is in a relaxed state and the nervous system is stimulated healing has a perfect opportunity to take place.

With improving circulation and blood supply, relieving stress and tension reflexology ultimately helps to achieve homeostasis (balance).

Reflexology is available in Ponteland, Newcastle Upon Tyne for £35 for 45 minute session and £45 for 60 minute session.

This can be combined with AromaReflexology or Facial Reflexology.

"We humans have lost the wisdom of genuinely resting and relaxing. We worry too much. We don't allow our bodies to heal, and we don't allow our minds and hearts to heal" - Thich Naht Hahn
